Occupying the space between the shared and dedicated hosting formats, a virtual dedicated server offers many of the capabilities and features of dedicated servers, including admin (root) access and dedicated IP addresses, but at a much lower price. Users share a server, but because each virtual dedicated server is effectively isolated from other accounts, the user has full control over the server space.
Also, virtual dedicated server plans feature very high performance and available disk space and bandwidth.
We partition our servers in such a way that each virtual dedicated server operates almost entirely independently of the other accounts that share the server space. This means that with a virtual dedicated server, you will enjoy consistent, high performance, even when usage peaks on the main server.
Virtual dedicated servers are particularly useful for companies and individuals that run higher-traffic Web sites or complex applications and thus need the bandwidth, consistent performance, and flexibility of a virtual dedicated server.
What software is installed on my virtual dedicated server?
The following software is installed on your Fedora Core 2 virtual dedicated server:
Web Servers and Components
Apache 2.0.51
Mod_ssl 2.0.51
Mod_perl 1.99
Mod_python 3.1.3
Control Panel
Cpanel unlimited domains or Plesk 7.5 Reloaded (support for one, 30, 100, or unlimited domain(s), depending on what you purchased when you set up your account)
How do I install an SSL certificate on my virtual dedicated server?
To obtain an SSL certificate for a Web site hosted on your dedicated server, you must first generate and submit a certificate signing request (CSR) to your Certification Authority (CA).
Once the CA has received the CSR, it will process the certificate request and, if the authentication process is successful, issue a signed certificate for your Web site. The CA will provide you with CSR-generation and certificate-installation instructions.
What can I install on my virtual dedicated server?
You may install anything you want on your dedicated server—as long as the installed material does not violate the restrictions listed in the license agreement.
Are there any restrictions on the content I can keep on my virtual dedicated server?
As long as the material does not violate the regulations listed in the license agreement, you may upload any type of content to your dedicated server account.
How do I install software on my Windows virtual dedicated server?
To install software on your server, log in to your Windows dedicated server using Remote Desktop, copy the applicable installation package to your server (typically a .exe file), and double-click on the installation package to open it.
What name servers do I use with my virtual dedicated server?
There are three steps to setting up DNS for Web sites hosted on your virtual dedicated server:
Create a zone file for your domain in Plesk.
Create and register two domain hosts.
Assign your name servers to your registered domain.
Step 1 - Creating a Zone File for Your Domain in Plesk
Plesk automatically creates a zone file for any domain you set up in Plesk. If you have already set up a domain in Plesk, you can skip this step.
To Create a Zone File for Your Domain in Plesk
Log in to Plesk as an administrator.
From the Clients section on the left, select the client you want to add a domain for.
On the Clients page, select Add New Domain.
Complete the domain form and click OK.
Select the type of hosting for the domain and click OK.
Complete the hosting setup page. Click OK.
NOTE: These changes to your dedicated server may take up to 24 hours to complete.
Step 2 - Creating and Registering Your Domain Hosts
Once you set up a domain and create a zone file in Plesk, you need to create and register two domain hosts for your domain. If your domain is registered with us, you can log in to your account manager to complete this step. If your domain name is registered with another company, you will need to contact them for instructions regarding domain host registration.
To Register Your Domain Hosts
Log in to your account manager.
From the Domains list, select Manage Domains.
Select the domain you want to host on your dedicated server.
On the right-side of the page, click Domain Host Summary.
NOTE: If you cannot make changes to your Domain Host Summary, your domain may be locked. To unlock your domain, select the domain you want to unlock ,and, under the Domain Details section on the right, click Unlock Domain.
Select Click here to see details or to modify.
In the Domain Hosts section, click Add New Host.
Enter a name for each of your domain hosts. For example, ns1.yourdomainnamehere.com and ns2.yourdomainnamehere.com. This prefix can be anything you want it to be, but make it something easy for you to remember.
NOTE: These two domain hosts can be used for other domains hosted on your virtual dedicated server. You do not need to create new domain hosts for each of your domains.
Enter the IP address for your server (you can find the IP address for your server in your dedicated or virtual dedicated server manager or in Plesk).
Click Save Changes.
Step 3 – Setting up Your Domain Name Servers
Now that you have created and registered two domain hosts, you need to set the name servers for your domain to point to your virtual dedicated server.
To Set up Your Domain Name Servers
Log in to your account manager.
From the Domains list, select Manage Domains.
Select the domain you want to host on your dedicated server.
On the right-side of the page, click NameServers Summary.
Select Click here to see details or to modify.
In the Set Name Servers section, select Custom Name Servers.
For your name servers, enter the names of the domain hosts you created previously. For example: ns1.yourdomainnamehere.com and ns2.yourdomainnamehere.com.
Click Save Changes.
About Virtual Dedicated Servers
Virtual dedicated servers offer many of the capabilities and features of dedicated servers, including admin (root) access and dedicated IP addresses, but at a much lower price. However, as a virtual dedicated server is, indeed, virtually dedicated, the customer in fact shares the server space with a small number of other customers. But because each virtual dedicated server is effectively isolated from other accounts on the server, the user has full control over the server space. As well, virtual dedicated server plans feature very high performance and available disk space and bandwidth.
Virtual private servers, which enable hosting providers to offer virtual dedicated servers, are based on the concept of partitions on mainframes that allow each division to function as a virtual standalone server dedicated to a single customer. To ensure high and reliable performance for all accounts, our server boxes are partitioned in such a way that each virtual dedicated server operates almost entirely independently of the other accounts that share the server space.
